Controlled Burn of Explosive Chemicals Conducted in St Leonards

Emergency services evacuate residents as investigation continues into explosive materials at a private property.
Emergency services carried out a controlled burn of explosive chemicals discovered at a property in St Leonards, East Sussex, following the arrest of a 28-year-old man on suspicion of producing illegal substances and creating an explosive substance for unlawful purposes.

Police presence intensified on Thursday after authorities responded to a report regarding the hazardous materials located at a residence on A259 Marina.

By Friday, a major incident was declared, leading to the evacuation of 73 residents as a safety cordon measuring 100 meters was established around the area.

A spokesman for Sussex Police stated that progress has been made in neutralizing the chemicals found within the property.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team successfully removed desensitized chemicals from the house and executed a controlled burn in a skip near the sea wall on Saturday.

Ongoing searches conducted by the EOD are aimed at identifying any additional hazardous materials at the residence to ensure the locality is devoid of explosive substances.

Approximately 500 more canisters containing unknown chemicals have been discovered, although these are not categorized as explosive.

These canisters are to be tested and assessed by the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service alongside national specialists after the EOD's initial search concludes.

The EOD’s preliminary evaluation indicated the presence of significant quantities of a certain material with explosive properties, prompting scientific experiments to ascertain the exact nature of the chemical.

The suspect, currently under detention, has been placed under the Mental Health Act for the duration of the ongoing investigation.

Chief Inspector James Scott has stated that all involved parties are collaborating to resolve the situation promptly and return residents to their homes safely.

The timeframe for the lifting of the cordon remains uncertain, although further updates are expected to be provided in the afternoon.

Community apprehensions extend to the Hastings Half Marathon, with a decision on the event anticipated at the same time as the ongoing evaluations of the vicinity.
