Children's Doctors Warn That Vaping Can Lead Young People to Smoking

A major review finds that youth vaping is linked to breathing problems, nicotine dependence and a higher likelihood of later cigarette smoking, prompting calls for faster restrictions on products designed to attract children.
Children who vape face a greater risk of breathing problems, nicotine dependence and later cigarette smoking, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has warned after reviewing the available evidence on vaping and young people.

The review examined more than 14,000 articles and drew on 81 studies.

It found consistent links between vaping among children and adolescents and symptoms including coughing, wheezing, bronchitis-type symptoms and worsening asthma.

It also found that young people who vape are more likely to go on to smoke cigarettes.

The findings do not mean that vaping has the same health risks as smoking conventional cigarettes.

For adult smokers, vaping can be a less harmful alternative and can help some people quit tobacco.

But doctors say that distinction does not make vaping harmless for children, particularly when products contain nicotine and are sold in flavours, colours and packaging that appeal to young people.

Nearly one in five 11- to 17-year-olds in Britain has tried vaping.

The review warns that nicotine dependence can develop quickly and that the long-term effects of vaping throughout childhood and adolescence are still not fully known.

The evidence also identifies associations between youth vaping and poorer oral health, mental-health concerns and risks to babies exposed to nicotine during pregnancy.

These associations do not by themselves prove that vaping caused every outcome, but the doctors say the overall pattern is sufficiently concerning to justify stronger action.

The warning arrives as the UK tightens its approach to tobacco and vaping.

Single-use vapes have already been banned, and the government has proposed further rules aimed at reducing youth appeal.

They include plain packaging, restrictions on colours and branding, keeping products out of sight in shops, and limiting flavour names that resemble sweets, desserts or alcoholic drinks.

The Royal College says the measures should be implemented quickly and should not be treated as the final answer.

The vaping market changes rapidly, and enforcement will be central to preventing illegal sales to children and the continued marketing of nicotine products as lifestyle accessories.

For parents, schools and policymakers, the report's central message is direct: vaping should not be normalised as a harmless part of growing up.

The next stage will be the government's detailed regulations on product presentation, flavours and retail display, which are intended to make nicotine products less attractive and less accessible to children.
