Catherine Zeta-Jones Was Destined to Play Morticia Addams

Nobody does a vampy black dress quite like her.

Nobody does gothic glamour like Morticia Addams. The matriarch of the ghoulish Addams family may hate all things pink and joyful, but her exquisite closet of LSBDs (long, skintight black dresses) are enough to spark a joyful twinkle in any fashion lover’s eye. Whether she’s being portrayed in a cartoon or by Anjelica Huston, she shines. And now, Catherine Zeta-Jones is taking on the fashionable role as well in the upcoming Netflix live-action series directed by Tim Burton, titled Wednesday (it indeed focuses on Wednesday Addams, the daughter). And anybody who has followed Zeta-Jones’ red carpet appearances will tell you, it’s about time.

Zeta-Jones is the perfect casting for the role of Morticia for a few reasons: She’s got the long, dark hair, and a signature husky voice to match it. But more importantly, the star also has a history of wearing vampy black dresses on the red carpet, meaning her personal style is meant for this role. The star has long favored a black gown, and for good reason: The look is timeless, flattering, and undeniably elegant. At the 1998 Oscars after-party, for instance, Zeta-Jones wore a black velvet gown with thin spaghetti straps, and it’s totally something that Morticia would wear if she was a Hollywood star. More recently, the actor also wore a black, deep-V lace gown by Zuhair Murad to the Golden Globes in 2018. We could easily see Morticia slinking around her creaky mansion in it while cutting off the heads of roses.

Considering how costuming, hair, and make-up play a big part in transforming actors for a role, we’d have to say that the glam team for Morticia will have a somewhat easy job working with Zeta-Jones. She’s already got that freakishly-elegant fashion aesthetic down pat-they just need to consult her own wardrobe for outfit inspiration. They should start with the corseted, lacey Dolce look she wore to the label's Alta Moda show in 2018. We can’t wait to see the actor completely own the role, like we know she will. Below, more of Zeta-Jones best black dress moments to tie you over until she does.
