British Tourist Killed in Quad-Cycle Collision in New Zealand
A fatal incident in Martinborough highlights ongoing concerns about road safety for tourists.
One British national has died, and three others have sustained serious injuries following a collision between a four-seater quad-cycle and a car in Martinborough, New Zealand.
The incident occurred around 10:45 AM local time on Thursday on Puruatanga Road.
According to local police, the deceased was critically injured and pronounced dead at the scene before emergency airlift services could transport them to a hospital.
The three injured individuals were also passengers on the quad-cycle and have been reported as suffering serious injuries.
A spokesperson from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed the news, stating, 'Our team in New Zealand have provided advice on bereavement abroad after one British person died and three others were seriously injured.' They expressed condolences to the family at this difficult time.
The New Zealand Police are collaborating with the British High Commission in Wellington as part of their ongoing investigation into the crash.
Inspector Brad Allen, who oversees road policing in the Wellington district, stated, 'Police’s thoughts, aroha, and condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased.'
The serious crash unit is currently conducting a scene examination, and inquiries into the specific circumstances of the accident are underway.
Life Flight, an air ambulance service, reported that two individuals from the quad-cycle incident were flown to Wellington Hospital for treatment following the crash.
Wayde Mines, the owner of Indi Bikes Martinborough, confirmed that the quad-bike was hired by two couples visiting the region, which is renowned for its vineyards.
He was quoted saying, 'It was a beautiful day in Martinborough that ended badly.' He added that the individuals were not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, indicating they were not engaging in reckless behavior.
The accident raises ongoing concerns regarding road safety for tourists in New Zealand, especially involving rental vehicles and recreational activities.
Local authorities are expected to review safety measures as investigations continue.
