Thierno Barry scored against Newcastle for the second time in five days to give Everton a 1–0 victory at St James’ Park and their first Premier League win since September.
His 49th-minute finish settled a rain-soaked Monday night encounter in which Everton were the better side, though they needed two important interventions from Jordan Pickford to protect their narrow lead.
The decisive opening came when Tyrique George ran unmarked into the penalty area. His low shot slipped underneath Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, leaving Barry to tap in from a few yards out.
It was Barry’s eighth goal in 12 appearances across all competitions this season, following his strike in Everton’s 3–1 Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle on Thursday. His scoring form has now delivered successive wins against the same opponents in two competitions.
Everton threatened to extend their advantage midway through the second half, when Hornicek made a sharp save from Jarrad Branthwaite’s header. The visitors also appealed for a late penalty after Fabian Schar appeared to catch Barry while attempting a clearance, but the video assistant referee upheld John Brooks’ decision not to award a spot-kick.
Newcastle’s clearest opportunity came in the 66th minute. Anthony Elanga met Harvey Barnes’ cross with a powerful shot that was kept out by a combination of Pickford and the post before the ball briefly trickled along the goalline.
Pickford, England’s goalkeeper, then used his feet to deny substitute Yoane Wissa’s low effort in the 90th minute. Those saves ensured Everton’s superiority was not undone by their failure to find a second goal.
Newcastle finished with 10 men after Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card in the 98th minute, just 84 seconds after his first booking, for catching Harrison Armstrong above the ankle.
