Wikipedia Co-Founder Larry Sanger on How His Site Went Woke

Larry Sanger argues that Wikipedia has abandoned neutrality, becoming increasingly aligned with progressive ideologies.
Larry Sanger, the co-founder of Wikipedia, has voiced sharp criticism of the platform he helped create, claiming that it has abandoned its foundational principle of neutrality and shifted towards a progressive ideological bias.

Sanger, who co-founded Wikipedia in 2001 with Jimmy Wales, alleges that the once-revolutionary encyclopedia has become a tool for promoting establishment narratives.

In recent interviews, Sanger has described Wikipedia as favoring liberal and progressive viewpoints, particularly on contentious political and cultural topics.

'Wikipedia has become a mouthpiece for the establishment,' Sanger stated, adding that it no longer offers balanced coverage of diverse perspectives.

He pointed to the disproportionate scrutiny of conservative figures compared to their liberal counterparts as evidence of systemic bias.

Sanger's concerns extend to Wikipedia's governance and editorial processes.

He argues that the platform's reliance on volunteer editors, while democratizing content creation, has made it vulnerable to ideological echo chambers.

He has also criticized Wikipedia’s handling of controversial topics, suggesting that dissenting opinions are often marginalized or omitted entirely.

Studies have supported claims of bias within Wikipedia.

A 2023 report by the Manhattan Institute found that the platform's articles on right-leaning public figures were more likely to contain negative language compared to those on left-leaning individuals.

This has fueled broader debates about Wikipedia’s credibility and its influence on public discourse.

Despite these criticisms, the Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees Wikipedia, maintains that the platform is committed to neutrality and transparency.

Jimmy Wales has defended the platform, stating that its volunteer-driven model ensures accountability and that biases are corrected over time as more contributors participate.

Wales acknowledged the challenges of maintaining neutrality in a polarized media landscape but emphasized the platform’s dedication to its core principles.

Larry Sanger’s critiques have reignited discussions about Wikipedia’s role as a global information source.

As one of the world’s most-visited websites, its perceived shift towards a specific ideological stance raises questions about the sustainability of open, user-generated content platforms in an era of increasing political polarization and misinformation.

Yeah it's woke alright IMO, and arguably anti-Christian. Just read one of its articles on ancient Israel and they said "This founding myth of the Israelites—known as the Exodus—is considered to be inaccurate or ahistorical by a majority of scholars". Total nonsense IMO. I'll be steering clear of Wikipedia from now on.
