Welfare Cuts in Blackpool Heighten Poverty Concerns

Welfare Cuts in Blackpool Heighten Poverty Concerns

Universal Credit changes spark fears among residents in a town already struggling with high poverty and mental health issues.
The announcement of welfare cuts in Blackpool has intensified concerns among residents grappling with increasing financial difficulties.

Owen Sandford, 27, who receives universal credit, expressed his frustrations, stating that escalating costs of living, including energy and food prices, have made survival increasingly challenging.

He noted, “The only thing not going up is my money.”

Recent policy changes articulated by Rachel Reeves include the freezing or reduction of the health element of universal credit and ongoing reviews of the personal independence payment (PIP).

The implications of these changes particularly alarm local organizations.

Lindsay Barlow, chief executive of the charity Disability First, indicated that many disabled individuals in the city are experiencing heightened anxiety about the impact of these decisions on their livelihoods.

Barlow reported receiving numerous distressing communications from community members, underscoring the anxiety surrounding the welfare cuts.

Blackpool has one of the highest rates of disability benefit claimants in the UK, with 17% of its population receiving assistance.

The town is also marked by significant health disparities, including a higher prevalence of mental health conditions and lower life expectancy compared to national averages.

Recent statistics reveal that Blackpool residents have the lowest life expectancy at birth among local authorities in England, further compounding the health and economic challenges faced by its citizens.

Support services in Blackpool are witnessing a surge in demand.

At Layton Methodist Church, volunteers assist approximately 600 individuals weekly, providing everything from meals to budgetary advice.

Jakki Garner, a volunteer, noted that while some individuals initially manage to purchase food through available assistance, their ability to sustain this dwindles within weeks.

“People buy it the first couple of weeks after they get the benefit,” she commented, adding that subsequently, beneficiaries struggle to make ends meet.

Diane Halstead, the church minister's wife, observed an emotional toll on families: “They feel they’re failing as parents … they’ll feed the children, then they’ll end up not eating themselves.” Both Garner and Halstead anticipate that reliance on food banks and community support will increase significantly as the government's safety net diminishes.

The Big Food Project, which supports local initiatives, reported distributing over 850,000 meals last year, with expectations to surpass one million in the current year.

Chief Executive Victoria Blakeman highlighted that many individuals face stark choices between food and heating, as the financial landscape worsens.

Among the youth, similar financial pressures are evident.

A 23-year-old participant at a drop-in center shared that his universal credit barely covers his food expenses, leaving him without stable housing.

He recounted his struggles as a father of a newborn, striving to provide for his child amidst severe financial constraints.

In the town center, Ken Rollinson, a mobility aid supplier, described the emotional struggles of his customers, many of whom express distress over their financial situations.

He frequently allows customers to pay in installments due to the affordability crisis.

Rollinson himself faces a challenging situation, struggling with health issues while attempting to balance work and parenthood.

As welfare reforms take effect, the socio-economic landscape in Blackpool continues to pose significant challenges for its residents, many of whom rely heavily on welfare support to navigate daily life.
