Survivors of E-Bike Fire Initiate Legal Action as Incidents Rise
A survivor from a tragic e-bike fire in East London leads a group of 12 men seeking justice against a manufacturer following a series of similar incidents.
Fires related to e-bikes and e-scooters in London have doubled over the past three years, sparking significant concern regarding their safety.
A pivotal case has emerged as Nazmush Shahadat, a survivor of a devastating e-bike fire, joins eleven others in legal action against the manufacturer Leon Cycle, marking a potentially groundbreaking legal initiative.
On March 5, 2023, Shahadat was awakened by sparks emanating from a modified e-bike battery located in his overcrowded flat in Shadwell, east London.
The fire quickly escalated, leading to the tragic death of his flatmate, Mizanur Rahman, a 41-year-old father of two.
The coroner’s report indicated that the blaze was instigated by the faulty battery of the e-bike.
Shahadat, who is currently pursuing a law degree at Hertfordshire University and paying £400 monthly for his accommodation, recounted the terrifying moments of the fire, which he described as spreading rapidly, resulting in black smoke and panic among the residents.
In a related development, landlords Sofina Begum and Aminur Rahman were fined over £90,000 at Snaresbrook Crown Court for housing offences last year, which underlined ongoing issues regarding tenant safety in shared accommodations.
The case of the e-bike fire highlights broader concerns about fire safety associated with electric scooters and bikes, particularly given the rising number of incidents.
Reports of fires caused by these devices have prompted authorities and safety advocates to call for stricter regulations and enhanced safety measures.
In another incident, on March 24, 2025, at approximately 2:26 PM, a double-decker Stagecoach bus crashed near St Paul’s Cathedral, resulting in injuries to three individuals.
Videos shared via social media showcased the bus in a compromised position against a flower bed outside a local Co-op supermarket.
Emergency services, including ambulance and paramedic teams, arrived within four minutes.
One patient was transported to the hospital, while two others were treated and released on-site.
The incident led to traffic disruptions in the City of London, necessitating road closures for approximately an hour while officials conducted their investigations.
City of London Police confirmed that inquiries concerning the crash are ongoing.
