Tory Chair Evasive on £5m Donation from Controversial Businessman
The Conservative Party chair, Richard Holden, has declined to answer whether the party received an additional £5 million from their largest donor, Frank Hester, despite Hester's past controversial remarks about Diane Abbott being made public.
Hester reportedly made racist and misogynistic comments about Abbott, suggesting she should be shot, in 2019.
Holden stated that he could not comment on the recent financial transactions between the party and Hester.
Hester gave £10m to a political party last year, making him their largest donor before the next election.
When asked on BBC's Politics Live if an additional £5m had been donated, Holden, the party's spokesperson, declined to answer but expressed comfort with accepting money from clear supporters.
He also mentioned Hester's apology for past comments and stated that individual donations should be accepted if an apology has been made.
When pressed further, Holden only stated that any new donations would be declared in due course.
The Labour Party chair, Anneliese Dodds, has requested transparency from Conservative Party chairman Andrew McFarlane regarding a reported £5 million donation from the same donor, Michael Hester, who previously gave the Tories £15 million.
McFarlane was interviewed about the matter and stated that any new donations would be declared in due course, but the Labour Party wants the information made public sooner.
Previous reports suggested that the Tories planned to keep the entire £15m and an additional £5m, but this has not been officially confirmed.
