New Acting SSB Director announced days after Director abruptly resigns

The BVI Social Security Board (SSB) has announced the appointment of Jeanette Scatliffe-Boynes as its new Acting Director, following the abrupt resignation of former Director, Antoinette Skelton.

On Sunday, January 3, former Premier Dr D Orlando Smith took to social media to pen a tribute to Skelton for her 38 years of service at the SSB.

In his post, the former premier said Skelton had resigned from the position of Director, just months prior to her scheduled retirement.

“Mrs Antoinette Skelton who has held the position of Director of Social Security for the past 38 years, demitted her office at very short notice on 31st December prior to her scheduled retirement of 30th June 2021,” Dr Smith said.

He added: “I would like to pay special tribute to her for managing so carefully and competently that very important social safety net, put in place nearly fifty years ago for the benefit of all who live and work in the British Virgin Islands.”

SSB confirms a pre-retirement

Just three days later, on Wednesday, January 6, the SSB confirmed the retirement of Skelton, while formally announcing the appointment of Scatliffe-Boynes as their new Acting Director.

The SSB said Scatliffe-Boynes appointed “upon recommendation by the Board of Directors of the Social Security Board”

The appointment took effect on January 1.

“The new Acting Director’s appointment has been approved for a period of one year, six months in the first instance until the position of Director has been filled permanently. SSB Director, Mrs Antoinette Skelton, preceded on pre-retirement leave effective December 31, 2020,” the institution added.

Speaking on her appointment, Scattliffe-Boynes said: “I am humbled and excited about this opportunity to lead the Social Security organization. I look forward to building on Mrs Skelton’s legacy and to leading the organisation to even higher levels of achievement as we go forward”.

Over 30 years as Deputy Director

According to the SSB, the new Acting Director comes with a wealth of experience within their organisation after serving almost 30 years in the post of Deputy Director.

“During her tenure, Mrs Scatliffe-Boynes functioned in numerous positions and managed a diverse portfolio in the organisation, including Benefits & Contributions, Public Relations, and Human Resources. She also served as Board Secretary,” SSB stated.

The new Acting Director also holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Business Administration and to date has acquired extensive credits in doctoral studies focusing on organisational management.
