Murder-Suicide Investigation Initiated Following Tragic Deaths of British Couple in New Zealand
New Zealand police are investigating the deaths of a British couple found in Roseneath, with authorities confirming the case is being treated as a murder-suicide.
A murder-suicide investigation has been launched by New Zealand police into the deaths of a couple, believed to be British, found in their home in Roseneath, a suburb of Wellington.
Police were called to the residence on Palliser Road on Monday as part of a welfare check after a concerned family member reached out to authorities.
According to a police spokesperson, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the couple's deaths is ongoing.
'Police can confirm that the deaths of two people at a residential property on Palliser Road, Roseneath, is being treated as a murder-suicide investigation,' the spokesperson stated.
'The police are providing support to the family at the centre of this tragic event, who have requested privacy as they grieve their loss.'
Detective Inspector Haley Ryan addressed the media and confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the community, stating, 'Based on the results of a scene examination and other inquiries, we will be referring the case to the coroner.
Post-mortems were completed today, and police will continue to have a presence in the area as we work to understand the reasoning behind this tragic incident.'
Police entered the home forcefully after a family member expressed concern for the couple’s well-being.
One neighbor, Emma Prestidge, noted that the couple had relocated from London and were settling into their new life in New Zealand just before the incident occurred.
'My understanding is they’d finally packed up their lives in London, and all their stuff was in a shipping container, and they were kind of looking to move here for good,' she remarked.
'They were in the next phase of their life, I guess, and ready to kind of set themselves up for the next part of their chapter, which is truly sad.'
The rental owner of the property described the couple as 'my British lodgers' and emphasized their vibrant approach to life, highlighting their love for adventure.
'Both they and their family lived life to the absolute full and were always planning or doing amazing adventures,' the landlord stated.
'They were both such positive and incredible parents, friends, and members of many communities.'
Detective Ryan has urged anyone with information related to the case to step forward.
'We would like to hear from anyone who may have information that can help our inquiries.
Anyone with residential CCTV that captures traffic movements in the Roseneath area, particularly on Palliser Road and surrounding streets, is asked to contact us.'
Meanwhile, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, as well as the New Zealand Coroner's Office, have been contacted for comments regarding the situation.
