Reports began to surface on social media and online forums indicating that users were experiencing an unprecedented number of disturbing Reels, a feature that allows users to share short video clips.

Complaints emerged primarily from a community discussion on Reddit, where users expressed their concern over the algorithm, which curates content based on individual preferences.

Users described a surreal experience of their feeds being dominated by violent imagery, with one user remarking that their account appeared to be inundated with videos depicting extreme violence and gore.

In response to the growing dissatisfaction, a spokesperson for Meta acknowledged the issue, stating, "We have fixed an error that caused some users to see content in their Instagram Reels feed that should not have been recommended.

We apologize for the mistake."

Meta's content policies are designed to shield users from graphic material, banning content that includes depictions such as dismemberment and visible innards, while also prohibiting sadistic remarks towards imagery depicting human and animal suffering.

However, the platform does allow some graphic content when it serves the purpose of raising awareness or condemning human rights abuses and atrocities, provided proper warning labels are present.
