Challenge to End Hereditary Peerages Sparks Call for Democratic Reform
The UK Liberal Democrats are attempting to amend the Government's hereditary peers bill in order to advocate for a fully elected House of Lords.
The existing bill aims to eliminate the right of 92 hereditary peers to inherit seats in parliament and is expected to pass the House of Commons.
By proposing an amendment, the Lib Dems seek to establish an entirely elected second chamber and remove the Prime Minister's influence in appointing new peers.
Despite Labour's 2022 pledge for an elected chamber, they currently aim to abolish hereditary peerages and introduce age limits.
Sarah Olney, Lib Dem Cabinet Office spokesperson, emphasized the necessity for democratic reform to restore public trust.
The amendment will be pushed for a vote if deemed relevant to the bill, underlining the ongoing debate over the structure of UK's upper legislative body.
