Labour MP Supports Chancellor's Rejection of Wealth Tax
Labour MP has defended Chancellor Rachel Reeves' decision to rule out a wealth tax, citing minimal effectiveness. Torsten Bell, a former Treasury official, argued during the Cheltenham literature festival that UK's wealth levels do not justify such a tax. Existing wealth-related taxes should be improved instead, he suggested.
A Labour MP has supported Chancellor Rachel Reeves' decision against introducing a wealth tax, asserting that it would have minimal financial impact.
The idea has been dismissed as ineffective by Torsten Bell, a former Treasury official and Resolution Foundation CEO.
Bell argued that the UK's wealth base, unlike that of the US, lacks individuals like Jeff Bezos to make such a tax viable.
Existing taxes like inheritance, capital gains, and stamp duty already target wealth, and Bell suggests improving these instead.
Despite pressures, Reeves believes in alternative fiscal strategies and criticized the Conservatives for unfulfilled housing promises.
She emphasized the need for 'tough decisions' in her upcoming budget on 30 October.
