Italian Activist Ilaria Salis Returns Home After Election to European Parliament
Italian anti-fascist activist Ilaria Salis has returned to her home in Monza, Italy, after being released from house arrest in Budapest. Her release follows her recent election to the European Parliament, which grants her legal immunity. Salis was detained in Hungary for over a year on assault charges related to a far-right demonstration.
Ilaria Salis, an Italian anti-fascist activist, returned to her family home in Monza, Italy, on June 15, 2024, following her release from house arrest in Budapest.
Salis, 39, had been detained in Hungary for over a year under charges of assaulting far-right demonstrators.
She was elected to the European Parliament as a member of the Italian Green and Left Alliance earlier this month, securing over 170,000 votes.
Her newly acquired parliamentary status grants her legal immunity, which expedited her release.
Her father, Roberto Salis, expressed relief and emphasized the need to drop the charges.
The charges stem from an alleged altercation at the far-right Day of Honor event in Budapest, which ironically saw no complaints from the supposed victims.
The Hungarian prosecution initially sought an 11-year prison term.
