High Court Ruling Spurs Calls for Closure of RAF Wethersfield Asylum Centre

Campaigners cite unlawful detention of vulnerable migrants as a key reason for closure demands following recent judicial decision.
Campaigners are urging the immediate closure of the RAF Wethersfield asylum centre after a high court ruled that the Home Office acted unlawfully when three asylum seekers, who had previously been victims of torture, violence, or trafficking, were detained at the facility.

The ruling has drawn attention to the vulnerabilities of those housed at this location, prompting various humanitarian organizations to voice their concerns.

Doctors of the World, a charity focused on assisting migrants and marginalized communities, stated that they welcome the court’s decision, highlighting that the Home Office's asylum accommodation policy fails to provide adequate protection for asylum seekers with special needs or disabilities.

They noted a troubling pattern of mental health issues among residents at Wethersfield, pointing out that from October 2023 to December 2024, over 62% of patients reported severe mental distress, with 30% expressing suicidal thoughts.

The organization emphasized that the conditions within containment camps had detrimental effects on residents’ mental well-being due to isolation and uncertainty about their futures.

Similarly, the Helen Bamber Foundation, which supports survivors of torture and trafficking, described RAF Wethersfield as both cruel and costly, contending that the use of ex-military sites for housing vulnerable individuals exacerbates the trauma for those already affected by oppression and abuse.

The foundation called for the site’s immediate closure and urged the government to fulfill commitments made by Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding humane treatment for asylum seekers.

They argued that a fair and prompt processing of asylum claims could facilitate a system that treats individuals seeking protection with dignity and integrates them within communities rather than isolating them in camps.

RAF Wethersfield began operating as an asylum centre under the tenure of former Home Secretary Suella Braverman and continues to serve that purpose.

The recent court ruling adds to ongoing debates about the appropriateness of mass accommodation sites for vulnerable populations in the UK. As the situation evolves, campaigners and humanitarian organizations are closely monitoring the government’s response and the potential implications for asylum seekers housed in similar settings.
