During a meeting of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s subcommittee on European affairs, Republican chair Keith Salff from Texas referred to transgender Representative Sarah McBride as 'Mr. McBride.' McBride, who made history as the first transgender person elected to the US House after her gender transition in November, was met with immediate protests from her Democratic colleagues.

Representative Bill Kitting from Massachusetts insisted that McBride be addressed correctly, urging for a show of basic respect.

The session, intended to cover issues like nuclear nonproliferation, international security, and US support for European alliances, was abruptly ended by the chair, who declared that the meeting was closed.

Later, McBride took to social media to reiterate her dedication to representing Delaware and highlighted her focus on important policy matters.

This incident occurs amid ongoing partisan discussions regarding transgender rights in Congress, with prior proposals from certain Republican members aimed at limiting transgender women’s access to female facilities.
