Heathrow Airport Shutdown Disrupts 270,000 Passenger Journeys Following Substation Fire

A fire at a nearby electricity substation led to a temporary closure of Europe's busiest airport, impacting hundreds of thousands of travelers.
Heathrow Airport, Europe’s largest aviation hub, faced a significant disruption on March 21, 2024, when a fire at a nearby electricity substation triggered a power outage, resulting in the airport being closed for nearly a day.

During this period, over 270,000 air passenger journeys were affected, as revealed by aviation industry statistics.

On the day of the incident, approximately 234,000 passengers had their flights cancelled, diverted, or delayed, with all flights grounded until around 6 PM. A secondary wave of disruption occurred the following day, affecting an additional 36,500 travelers when 74 flights were cancelled, amounting to 6.1% of the total scheduled flights for March 22.

While the airport declared itself “open and fully operational” on March 22, the absence of many aircraft and flight crews due to the previous day’s shutdown played a crucial role in ongoing service challenges.

The Metropolitan Police reported that their investigation into the fire has shifted away from a potentially criminal context, indicating that they found no evidence suggesting the incident was suspicious.

An ongoing investigation involving the National Grid, London Fire Brigade, and Southern Electricity Network is in place to ascertain the specific cause of the fire.

In the wake of the incident, UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband directed the National Energy System Operator to conduct a thorough investigation, with preliminary findings expected within six weeks.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, in a recent interview, expressed deep concern regarding the incident and emphasized the necessity for answers regarding the airport's operations during the emergency.

Meanwhile, Heathrow’s CEO Thomas Woldbye is scheduled to face questioning from Members of Parliament on April 2, 2024, addressing matters such as the decision to close the airport, the speed of its reopening, backup power protocols, and administrative responses to the crisis.

Heathrow Airport is the busiest in Europe, handling over 83.9 million passengers in 2024, underscoring the extensive ramifications of this incident on international travel.
