Duke of Sussex Resigns as Patron of Sentebale Amid Boardroom Conflicts
The Duke of Sussex and co-founder Prince Seeiso step back from their roles in a charity focused on supporting vulnerable youth in Southern Africa following governance disputes.
The Duke of Sussex has resigned as a patron of Sentebale, a charity he founded in 2006 with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, in light of ongoing internal conflict within the organization.
Established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, Sentebale primarily aids young people affected by HIV/AIDS in southern Africa, particularly in Lesotho and Botswana.
The resignation follows a significant dispute involving several trustees and the chairwoman of Sentebale’s board, Dr. Sophie Chandauka.
Reports indicate that tensions heightened regarding the charity's fundraising strategy and its operational focus in Africa.
In a joint statement, the duke and Prince Seeiso expressed their support for the departing trustees, emphasizing their commitment to the charity's mission.
They stated that the situation had become untenable, leading to their resignation as patrons until further notice.
Dr. Chandauka responded critically to the ducal resignation, indicating that the issue stems from governance concerns raised regarding certain trustees.
She referenced actions she had taken to bring attention to governance issues within the charity, and claimed that the High Court had intervened to prevent her removal from her position as chairwoman.
Former trustees, including Timothy Boucher and Audrey Kgosidintsi, have also released a statement reflecting on their regret over having to step down, attributing their decision to a breakdown of trust and confidence in the board’s leadership.
They highlighted the organization’s impacts, stating that Sentebale has provided care, training, and life skills to numerous children and families in need.
The turmoil within Sentebale has culminated in legal actions, with the chairwoman reportedly filing a lawsuit to retain her position amidst requests for her resignation from several trustees.
The departing trustees expressed sorrow over the turn of events but felt they had no alternative, prioritizing the charity's interest above their roles.
In response to the resignations and internal strife, Sentebale stated that it had not officially received notice of resignation from the Duke of Sussex or Prince Seeiso, and noted that restructuring the board is part of its transformation agenda aimed at addressing broader issues of youth health, wealth, and climate resilience in Southern Africa.
The Charity Commission has acknowledged awareness of issues regarding Sentebale's governance and is currently assessing the situation to determine necessary regulatory actions.
The Duke of Sussex's association with Sentebale has historically been one of his few retained patronages following the loss of several royal honors in 2021, coinciding with significant changes in his royal duties after stepping back from active royal life.
