Arrest Made Following Sabotage of Fibre Optic Cables by Climate Activists Targeting UK Insurance Firms
Environmental group claims responsibility for disrupting fibre optic networks in major UK cities as police continue investigations.
A 29-year-old man has been arrested by the City of London police in connection with acts of sabotage on fibre optic cables allegedly carried out by environmental activists.
The group, known as Shut the System, has claimed responsibility for the attacks targeting several key locations in London, Leeds, Birmingham, and Sheffield, citing the involvement of insurance companies in supporting fossil fuel industries.
According to Shut the System's press release, the sabotage was aimed at insurers due to their critical role in underwriting contracts and investments that support the fossil fuel economy.
The group circulated an image purportedly showing one of their members, disguised as an electrical engineer, cutting cables near 52 Lime Street in London's financial district.
Offices affected in the attack included those of W/R/B Underwriting, Chaucer, Lloyd's of London, Talbot AIG, Chubb, and AIG.
The disruption also extended to AIG in Birmingham, Markel in Sheffield, and Axa in Leeds.
At this stage, the City of London police are continuing their investigations to determine the extent of the damage and the impact on the targeted companies.
Matthew Geyman, managing director of cybersecurity firm Intersys, noted a marked slowdown in internet speeds in the area during the incident, emphasizing, however, that robust networks are typically designed to withstand such attacks through the use of redundant lines and automatic fail-safes.
Roadworks noted near Lloyd's of London are believed to be connected with repair efforts following the physical damage to the cables.
Shut the System, which surfaced last year with a series of disruptive actions against City-based insurers and financial institutions such as Barclays Bank, has taken a clandestine approach, differing from groups like Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil that encourage civil disobedience.
Their recent WordPress statement suggests that the group views their actions as initiating a 'new phase' in climate activist strategies, focusing on sabotage of infrastructure linked to those they hold responsible for global warming.
Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Ives of the City of London police confirmed the arrest, detailing that the suspect has been released on bail under conditions, pending further investigation into the incidents reported on January 20th.
