Angela Rayner: I'll Resign if Found Guilty of False Residency Claims
Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner has stated that she will resign if found to have broken the law.
An investigation by Greater Manchester Police is ongoing regarding allegations that Rayner provided false information about her main residence in relation to her former council house.
Rayner expressed confidence in following rules at all times but added that if a criminal offense was committed, she would step down and emphasized the importance of politicians adhering to the law.
A Labour MP, Lucy Powell, who is also the shadow housing secretary, is under investigation by the police over allegations of false housing declarations.
The investigation was prompted by a complaint from Conservative deputy chairman James Daly, who questioned Ms. Powell's statement that a property she owned was not her main residence.
The police initially decided not to investigate but changed their mind after Mr. Daly pointed out that they had not checked the electoral roll or spoken to neighbors.
Ms. Powell has stated that she looked into the matter before becoming an MP and sought expert advice.
The investigation relates to events before she was an MP. Greater Manchester Police are investigating potential offenses related to a house sale by shadow home secretary Lucy Powell (nee Rayner).
She bought a council home in 2007 with a 25% discount under the Right to Buy scheme and made a £48,500 profit when selling it in 2015.
The police investigation follows new information provided by Mr. Daly, but no further details have been given.
