VG Man Jailed! Scared Woman With Gun During Curfew

Virgin Gorda resident Rudy Vanterpool was given a 13 year, three-month custodial sentence for gun-related offences, breach of curfew and criminal trespass, during which time he scared a woman with a firearm in May last year.

The construction worker pleaded guilty to the offences of two counts of breach of curfew, one count of criminal trespass, two counts of carrying a firearm and possession of a firearm.

He received seven years for possession of a firearm, five years for carrying a firearm, three months for breach of curfew and 12 months for criminal trespass.

However, during the sentencing hearing yesterday, June 9, Magistrate Christilyn Benjamin ordered that his sentences are to run concurrently, which means that he would serve the sentences at the same time and spend no more than seven years at Her Majesty’s Prison.

Notably, he has already spent just over a year in HMP; hence, it will be deducted from his sentence.

Facts Of The Case

The facts in this matter indicate that on May 24, the Virtual Complainant (VC) was home when she heard knocking on her door and window and was about to open her door when Vanterpool thrust it open.

The two had a verbal spat, and the VC told Vanterpool to leave, but he refused to do so.

The VC then informed him that she would videotape him and call the police to intervene in the matter.

Hearing this, Vanterpool pulled a gun from his pocket and told her to refrain from making a video.

The VC then reported grabbed a small knife, and Vanterpool eventually left.

The police were called in, and they proceeded to search for Vanterpool in relation to the incident.

Still at large, Vanterpool, on May 27, returned to the VC’s home and again knocked on her window, and he asked her to meet him outside of the home.

Instead of complying, she then placed a call to the police to report the matter.

When the police came, Vanterpool was seen by the VC running from the apartment towards the bushes while pitching an object from his waist.

He reportedly returned sometime after, and he was informed by the police that he was in breach of the curfew and he should leave.

It was then that the VC informed the police that Vanterpool dropped an object while he was fleeing earlier.

A loaded Glock 19 with six rounds of 9 mm ammunition was found.

He was subsequently arrested on May 29 when he fled to Moskito Island and brought back to Virgin Gorda.

He was later charged with the offences before the court.

The Crown was represented by attorney Kael London, while Vanterpool was represented by attorney Leroy Jones.
