U.S. To U.K. Travel–Air Bridges Possible Between London And New York

Whilst visitors from the U.K are still not allowed to travel to the U.S., talks have begun to discuss the possibility of putting travel corridors in place from some cities in the U.S. to the U.K.
The Telegraph reported that American and British ministers are discussing the idea of allowing flights to and from “low-risk areas” areas in the U.S.–such as New York–into English airports. A travel corridor between the two cities would eradicate the need for quarantine.

The U.S. imposed a travel restriction on March 14, from anyone arriving directly from the U.K.

The U.K. imposed a 14-day quarantine for any arrivals from the U.S. and with such high Covid-19 infection rates, this will likely remain the case for the country as a whole for the immediate future. The U.S. reported over 1,000 deaths each day throughout August.

Each state in the U.S. currently has its own system in place for lockdown, so a decision would need to be taken on a city by city basis.

As reported by The Telegraph, all ten of New York’s regions are entering the final phase of a reopening process. The lockdown has been strict, so its “seven-day infection rate stands at just 7.2 cases per 100,000”. This is far below England’s seven-day infection rate of 11.3. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the U.K. currently has a threshold of 20 to exempt a country.

Sky News reported that the U.K is eager to put an air bridge in place between London and New York to secure trade routes and partners, post-Brexit.

Five million British people visited the U.S. in 2019 and roughly the same number of American visitors arrived on British shores. The London to New York flight route (from JFK to Heathrow airport) is one of the busiest long-haul routes globally–there were more than 14,000 flights in 2019.
