Released on June 20, 2025, the animated musical fantasy KPop Demon Hunters quickly ascended to become Netflix’s most-watched original animated film of all time, achieving over twenty-six million views and more than forty three million hours watched within six weeks. It maintained a position in the platform’s global Top 10 for at least seven consecutive weeks and ranked among the top English-language films, with viewership approaching one hundred eighty million over eight weeks.
The film follows Huntr/x—a fictional K-pop girl group comprised of Rumi, Mira, and Zoey—who secretly battle demons while performing as pop stars. Their rivals are the demon-disguised boy band, the Saja Boys.
The soundtrack has achieved notable commercial success. The track “Golden” by Huntr/x reached number one on both the US Billboard Global 200 and Hot 100 charts, topping national charts in multiple countries. Another track, “Your Idol” by the Saja Boys, became the highest-charting K-pop boy band song on US Spotify. Multiple tracks from the soundtrack entered prominent chart positions.
Netflix is staging a limited theatrical sing-along event for the film on August 23 and 24 in select territories including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. These screenings display on-screen lyrics for audience participation.
Co-director Maggie Kang has hinted at possible extensions of the story, with discussions underway for a sequel and further media expansion.
The film has also become a focal point of the broader surge in K-pop’s global cultural influence, with traditional K-pop acts experiencing renewed momentum in parallel to the movie’s popularity.
