Lionel Messi and Magic Johnson to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

U.S. President Joe Biden honors two sports legends for their contributions beyond the field
U.S. President Joe Biden will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to two iconic sports figures—Lionel Messi and Earvin "Magic" Johnson—at a ceremony set to take place next Saturday at the White House.

This prestigious honor, one of the highest civilian awards in the United States, is given to individuals whose contributions to society are deemed extraordinary.

Recognizing Global Contributions
The White House announced that the medal will be presented to 19 individuals spanning fields such as politics, entertainment, sports, civil rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and life sciences.

In a statement, the White House noted that recipients have "dedicated themselves to advancing the values, security, or prosperity of the United States, global peace, or significant public and private initiatives."

Lionel Messi’s Legacy
Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time, has won the Ballon d’Or eight times and the FIFA Player of the Year award another eight times.

Throughout his illustrious career, Messi has shattered numerous records and won 45 team titles, including four UEFA Champions League trophies, two Copa América championships, and the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in 2022.

Since joining Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, Messi continued to excel, earning the league MVP title in 2024 after scoring 20 goals and providing 16 assists in just 19 matches.

Off the field, Messi is a staunch advocate for children’s health and education through the Leo Messi Foundation and serves as a UNICEF ambassador.

Magic Johnson’s Impact
Earvin "Magic" Johnson, a legendary NBA point guard, led the Los Angeles Lakers to five NBA championships and is regarded as one of the greatest basketball players in history.

After his early retirement in 1991 due to an HIV diagnosis, Johnson became a prominent advocate in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Johnson has been inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame twice, in 2002 and 2010, and was a key member of the "Dream Team" that won the gold medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Post-retirement, Johnson has continued to make a significant social impact as a businessman and co-owner of sports franchises, including the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball.

A Prestigious Tradition
The Presidential Medal of Freedom has previously been awarded to notable athletes such as Michael Jordan, Jerry West, Bob Cousy, Arthur Ashe, and Tiger Woods.

By honoring Messi and Johnson, Biden continues this tradition of recognizing sports figures who have used their influence to drive meaningful social change and inspire global audiences.

The upcoming ceremony will celebrate their extraordinary contributions, both on and off the field, solidifying their legacies as not only sports legends but also champions of humanity.
