Rishi Sunak Criticized for Awarding Knighthood to Tory Donor Mohamed Mansour
Rishi Sunak has come under fire for knighting Mohamed Mansour, a major Tory donor and party treasurer, recognized for his contributions to business, charity, and politics.
Last year, Mansour donated £5 million to the Conservative Party, sparking Labour accusations of undue rewards for party benefactors.
Alongside Mansour, other honours were granted to notable political figures and public servants, amidst questions about the announcement's timing during Parliament's Easter recess.
Prominent individuals including Farming Minister Mark Spencer, MP Philip Davies, and former ministers Tracey Crouch and Harriett Baldwin also received honours. The release, diverging from traditional timings, also celebrated achievements across various sectors, including film and artificial intelligence.
Critics, including Labour Party chair Anneliese Dodds and Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper, condemned the perceived link between political donations and honours, calling for a merit-based system. Reform UK leader Richard Tice decried the situation as indicative of cronyism.
The government highlighted Mansour's extensive philanthropy and public service, pointing to his support for the now King's Foundation.
The announcement also acknowledged the contributions of other newly honoured MPs and public figures, underlining their service in both parliamentary roles and wider societal contributions.
