Rwandan Footballer's Dismissal Sparks Concerns Over UK Asylum Plan

The suspension and expulsion of Congolese footballer Héritier Luvumbu in Rwanda, after a goal celebration reference to the DRC conflict, is casting doubt on UK's refugee policy.

Luvumbu, who played for Rayon Sports, was banned for six months and contract terminated for a gesture interpreted as support for victims in the deadly DRC crisis.

His treatment coincides with the M23 militia's violent activities in DRC, allegedly backed by Rwanda, which the UK plans to use as a hub for its asylum seekers.

This has refueled the debate over the UK's contentious immigration strategy, particularly after the UK supreme court deemed the plan illegal, citing safety concerns.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's push to override this ruling and claim Rwanda as a safe destination has met with renewed criticism, especially from human rights groups and parliamentary watchdogs who underline Rwanda's problematic records on political dissent and free speech, challenging the plan's alignment with UK's human rights commitments.
