London Underground Strike to Proceed: Tube Walkouts Confirmed
London Underground employees will proceed with planned strikes starting Friday evening as negotiations to resolve a salary conflict have failed.
The RMT union announced on Friday that their efforts to settle the pay dispute were unsuccessful, leading to walkouts planned from January 5 to January 12. However, significant disruptions are expected to start on the evening of Sunday, January 7, as Tube services begin to decrease, continuing heavily from Monday through Thursday.
The strikes include a variety of personnel such as train operators, engineering train drivers, network control staff, signalling, fleet maintenance workers, and station staff.
The strikes will commence with maintenance train staff from Ruislip Depot striking for 24 hours starting 18:00 GMT on Friday. This will be followed by a 24-hour walkout by control staff on Sunday and then a widespread strike by nearly 10,000 RMT members from Monday to Wednesday.
An RMT spokesperson expressed regret over the disruptions but emphasized the determination to secure a negotiated pay settlement that includes travel benefits and a grading structure ensuring members do not suffer losses.
The RMT is striking over a pay increase offer that falls below inflation. Meanwhile, TfL insists that the proposed pay rise is the most sustainable following a requirement to cut approximately £230 million in costs as part of a government financial agreement from August 2022.
