Liverpool Street Station Named the Busiest in the Country as Elizabeth Line Boosts Passenger Numbers
Liverpool Street is now the UK's busiest station, with a surge in passengers from the new Elizabeth line, surpassing Waterloo, which dropped to third place. Paddington followed closely as the second busiest, due to the line's popularity.
The station's leap from fourth to the number one spot reflects an estimated increase of 50 million passengers in the year leading up to April, reaching a total of 80.4 million. This growth may fuel controversial plans to expand Liverpool Street to increase capacity, amidst concerns over preserving the city's heritage.
The data from the Office of Rail and Road also reveals that the Elizabeth line has dramatically affected other stations like Farringdon, now the ninth busiest, and Tottenham Court Road, which debuted at seventh place after just opening in May 2022.
Transport for London (TfL) reports that the Elizabeth Line hit a record of 769,000 trips in one day and boasts 4.3 million weekly journeys. Since its opening, the line has serviced 270 million passengers.
Feras Alshaker of the ORR highlighted the Elizabeth line's role in transforming travel across London, while London TravelWatch pointed out the need for improved reliability on the service, particularly west of Paddington.
Although passenger numbers are rebounding after the pandemic, issues remain, including recent disruptions due to broken power cables near Acton affecting several trains.
Despite the challenges, TfL celebrates the official completion of the Elizabeth line, marking the end of the two-decade-long Crossrail project. However, Mayor Sadiq Khan is concerned with ongoing reliability issues, urging Network Rail for solutions.
The prominence of several Elizabeth line stations among the UK's top 10 busiest underscores the new line's impact and rapid acceptance among travelers.
