Health Minister & Governor received 2nd dose of AstraZeneca jab

Both the Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Maline (AL), and the Governor of the Virgin Islands H.E. John J. Rankin CMG, have received their second dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine on Friday, April 23, 2021.

First, in line for vaccination, Hon Malone said the second dose went well and as required, he will be monitored for 30 minutes after taking the dose.

Governor John J. Ranking after receiving his second jab remarked that it did not hurt and shared that his daughter is involved in vaccination in London, as such, he recognizes the importance of getting vaccinated for COVID-19.

“The risks involved is in not getting vaccinated, that’s the real risk and so I hope that other people will get vaccinated to help to open up the economy and help to keep everybody safe,” he said.

Other persons who received their second dose included Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) who also encouraged persons to get vaccinated and remarked that the vaccine is safe as recommended by his daughter and Doctor in the UK.

“I want to encourage everyone to take this vaccine, it’s for your own safety… the risks of not taking the vaccine is greater than the vaccine itself, we encourage everyone… the frontline workers, persons who come in contact with tourists to take the vaccine,” he said.

Journalists Cathy O. Richards, the first woman to receive the vaccine in the Virgin Islands (VI) on February 11, 2021, also received her second dose and remarked that she is full of hope for the future of the VI getting out of the pandemic by getting vaccinated.

While he requested to stay off camera, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon Julian Willock also received his second dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab yesterday, April 23, 2021, some hours after the Governor and the Health Minister.

Gov'ts vaccination drive continues


The government's COVID-19 vaccination drive continues where members of the public will first have to register via a special website to schedule their vaccination at a public clinic or visit an approved private medical institution.

According to the Health Minister, a person is deemed to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after they have received both doses of an approved two-dose vaccine, such as AstraZeneca, Pfizer, or Moderna, and one shot of a single-dose vaccine such as Johnson & Johnson.
