Funeral of Pc Rosie Prior Held in York Amid Nationwide Police Respect
The ceremony for the North Yorkshire police officer, who died while assisting at a road crash, is attended by officers from across the UK.
On Thursday morning, a ceremonial funeral for Pc Rosie Prior was held at York Minster, drawing approximately 800 family members, friends, and police colleagues to honor her service and sacrifice.
Pc Prior, a 45-year-old member of North Yorkshire Police, lost her life while attending to a road incident on the A19 at Bagby, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, last month.
During the service, the funeral cortege was led through the streets to the Minster by a police piper and four police horses, with the police presence significantly marked by North Yorkshire officers and flag bearers representing various UK police forces.
A guard of honor was also assembled outside the Minster to pay respects.
Pc Prior’s husband, Chris, expressed gratitude on behalf of their family for the support received during this tragic time.
In a statement, he acknowledged the help from North Yorkshire Police and the Police Federation, particularly praising the Family Support Officers.
He emphasized the profound loss felt by the family and requested privacy as they navigate their grief.
Prior to her tragic death, Pc Prior and another individual, Ryan Welford, were struck by a lorry while assisting at the crash site.
The incident claimed both their lives, while a teenage passenger in Mr. Welford's vehicle suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the lorry, a 65-year-old man from Berwick-upon-Tweed, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been released under investigation.
Tim Forber, Chief Constable of North Yorkshire, commended Pc Prior for her dedication to the community and her commitment to public safety, recalling her motivation to join the police force more than two years ago.
The family described her as a devoted mother, wife, and sister, who will be "deeply missed" by all who knew her.
Pc Prior joined North Yorkshire Police in May 2022 as a student officer, subsequently becoming part of the response team focused on issues such as searching for missing persons.
Before her police career, she worked in sales and later managed a coffee van business.
In an effort to honor Pc Prior’s memory, her family has invited attendees to consider donating to the Police Children’s Charity, a cause she supported, which aids police families facing adversities.
