eBay Fraudster Faces Fine Over 'Queen's Walking Stick' Scam
A 26-year-old man, Dru Marshall from Romsey, Hampshire, was fined £613 and received a community order for fraudulently selling a walking stick on eBay that he falsely claimed belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Marshall, pretending to be a senior footman at Windsor Castle, deceitfully announced that the proceeds would go to Cancer Research UK. The item was listed shortly after the Queen's death in September 2022 and bids reached £540 before he ended the auction upon learning of a police investigation.
Despite his claims that the listing was a joke or social experiment, evidence from his computer's search history revealed his intentions to dupe buyers.
The case, tried at Southampton Magistrates' Court, ended in Marshall's conviction for fraud by false representation. The prosecution noted Marshall's exploitative use of the Queen's death for personal gain and attention.
