Dr. Richard Georges to be appointed as the bvi's first poet laureate

Dr. Richard Georges to be appointed as the bvi's first poet laureate

The public is invited to the Virtual Ceremony for the Territory’s first ever Poet Laureate, Dr. Richard Georges on Friday, November 13 at 7:00 p.m.

The evening will explore the power of poetry in our lives through featured performances by the Callaloo Poets, a screening of the three part short documentary series called “On Becoming a Poet” and much more.

The designation of a Virgin Islands Poet Laureate has become a country’s way to express its love and appreciation for the art of poetry. The Poet Laureate of the Virgin Islands is the official poet ambassador of the territory and is selected from amongst the territory’s most accomplished poets and must serve for three years.

Director of Culture, Dr. Katherine Smith said “poetry reflects the voice of the soul. Poets exist at the heart of society. Poetry encourages art, creativity, imagination and the expression of emotions. Through poetry we can confront truths that are difficult. Poetry is a vehicle of learning, and can transmit socio-cultural values as well as foster a people’s collective memory.

“The establishment of the Virgin Islands Poet Laureate Programme signifies a significant step and maturation of this art form in Virgin Islands society,” she further added.

Literary Arts Officer/Senior Executive Officer, Anika Christopher said as Poet Laureate, Dr. Georges will;

* Act as a literary ambassador to promote greater appreciation for the reading and writing of poetry

* Act as a cultural ambassador for the territory, promoting the understanding of and appreciation for Virgin Islands history and cultural heritage through their poetry

* Present an annual lecture and reading of his or her poetry (optional)

* Represent the territory at different local, regional and international literary events

* Give a reading or presentation to inaugurate and close their term

* Develop programs and projects designed to increase the appreciation of poetry in the Virgin Islands, in collaboration

* Create and or take part in mentorship programs to mentor emerging poets

* Make suggestions for the improvement of existing literary programs and project.

Friday night’s ceremony is a part on a month-long agenda for Culture and Tourism.

This event will be streamed LIVE on the Government’s Facebook page @BVIGovernment and @284 Media and is part of Culture and Tourism Month, which is a collaboration between the Department of Culture and the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board and Film Commission.
