Doctor Assumes Disabled Woman's Sexual Inactivity, Denies Proper Healthcare: Kat Watkins' Traumatic Experiences
A woman named Kat Watkins, who uses a wheelchair due to the condition osteogenesis imperfecta, has shared her experience of being assumed by a doctor that she was not having sex because of her disability.
During a smear test, the consultant also commented on her being "an odd shape." Ms. Watkins is one of over 30 adults who shared similar experiences of facing barriers to healthcare due to their disabilities with BBC Wales Live.
The Welsh government expressed disappointment upon hearing these stories.
Due to her condition, Ms. Watkins finds it difficult to access proper healthcare and now avoids seeking medical attention due to past traumatic experiences.
Ms. Watkins has been advocating for 37 years to overcome various barriers in her life, which she considers more than just obstacles due to the constant struggle.
She shared her experience with smear tests, explaining that a consultant suggested canceling them because she was not sexually active at the time.
Ms. Watkins felt disrespected as the consultant assumed she wasn't having sex due to her disability.
Despite her instructions on body positioning, she was treated as a textbook example, requiring multiple visits to obtain accurate results.
During another hospital visit, she felt unheard and disbelieved when she reported having broken bones in her leg.
It was later confirmed that the leg was indeed broken in five places.
A woman named Ms. Watkins received a letter from her doctor stating that her medical procedure was done correctly and no issues were found.
However, Ms. Watkins felt dismissed and heartbroken as she believed her concerns were not taken seriously.
Swansea Bay health board responded that they couldn't comment on individual cases but were willing to discuss Ms. Watkins' concerns with her.
Ms. Watkins expressed feeling completely failed by the healthcare system.
