A teacher, Ieuan Bartlett, is on trial, facing 12 counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust, including two charges of sexual intercourse, with a "vulnerable" teenage pupil.
The trial is taking place at Cardiff Crown Court. Bartlett, who served as a welfare officer, is accused of taking advantage of his role and engaging in sexual activity with the teenage pupil over several months.
The court heard that Bartlett and the pupil frequently met alone at school, leading the pupil to believe that they were in a relationship. The teenager told police during an interview that Bartlett had pressured her into sending explicit images and expressed a desire to spend a weekend with her in a hotel. She also mentioned that he had kissed her and visited her home using a side door to avoid being recorded on a security camera.
Bartlett has denied any sexual relationship with the pupil during the school term but acknowledged having sexual contact with her after the school term ended. The prosecution presented text messages as evidence suggesting a longer-lasting sexual relationship between Bartlett and the pupil. The trial is ongoing, and Bartlett maintains his innocence.
