All eyes on Britain after Denmark announce ban on oil drilling
THE Scottish and British governments have been urged to commit to ending fossil fuel extraction after Denmark announced a ban on North Sea drilling this week.
On Thursday the Danish government voted to cancel the country’s next oil and gas licensing round and back a ban on future offshore licensing.
Existing platforms in the North Sea will be allowed to continue operating, but extraction will be ended by 2050.
With the government set to lead crucial climate talks at 2021’s COP26 in Glasgow, campaigners have called for Britain to follow suit.
Friends of the Earth Scotland’s Ryan Morrison said: “This is a major milestone in the critical decade for action in trying to reconcile our energy systems with climate limits.
“Britain should join this growing number of countries by committing to phase out production and investing in a just transition away from fossil fuels.”
