UK National Crackdown on Fraud Results in Over 400 Arrests and £7.5 Million Seized

UK National Crackdown on Fraud Results in Over 400 Arrests and £7.5 Million Seized

Operation Henhouse, conducted in February, reflects a significant enforcement action against fraud across the UK.
In a coordinated national effort to combat fraud, over 400 individuals have been arrested, and more than £7.5 million has been seized as part of Operation Henhouse, a major initiative launched by the National Economic Crime Centre (NECC) and the City of London Police.

This operation, conducted throughout February, has resulted in a total of 422 arrests and 362 cease and desist notices issued to suspected fraudsters.

During the operation, law enforcement agencies conducted 155 voluntary interviews, and account-freezing orders were placed on £3.9 million, augmenting the total seized amount of £7.5 million.

Fraud has been identified as the most prevalent crime in the UK, accounting for approximately 41 percent of all recorded crime, with an estimated annual cost of £6.8 billion for victims in England and Wales.

Every police force across the UK, alongside Regional Organised Crime Units, participated in the operation.

Agencies such as the Financial Conduct Authority, the National Crime Agency (NCA), and National Trading Standards were also involved, marking the fourth edition of Operation Henhouse.

Specifics from the operation indicated substantial outcomes across various regions.

In Merseyside, authorities seized or forfeited £2.7 million in suspected criminal cash and assets, including high-value watches valued at £900,000.

Additionally, five account freezing orders totaling over £128,000 were executed.

Investigations resulted in 12 suspects being interviewed for ongoing fraud-related offences, and three individuals were formally charged.

Leicestershire Police executed 18 warrants, leading to the arrest of 18 suspects and two voluntary interviews.

More than £250,000 in cash was confiscated, alongside nine vehicles and various high-value items such as watches, jewellery, and designer clothing.

In Kent, financial investigators successfully returned nearly £1 million to a victim of an investment scam.

The police in this region made more than 20 arrests and seized £279,000 in cash and assets.

The 2023 results demonstrated a marked increase in enforcement actions compared to the previous year, with a 91 percent rise in cash seizures and a 28 percent increase in cease and desist orders.

Nick Sharp, Deputy Director of Fraud at the NECC, noted that the results reflect the collaborative commitment of officers nationwide to tackle the often devastating impacts of fraud.

Meanwhile, Detective Superintendent Oliver Little of the City of London Police highlighted the importance of Operation Henhouse in disrupting organised crime groups that frequently employ technology to perpetrate fraud on a large scale.

As efforts continue, the focus remains on building on these initial successes throughout the coming year.
