UK Government to Launch Digital Wallet for Driving Licences and Other Documents
App with Digital Document Storage Aimed for Release Later This Year in the UK
The UK government is set to introduce a new app featuring a digital wallet later this year, enabling citizens to store digital versions of government-issued documents on their smartphones.
Aimed at increasing convenience and security, the digital wallet will allow users to access digital driving licences, among other credentials.
The app, developed as part of the Gov.uk platform, will roll out initially with a veteran card, followed by a pilot phase for digital driving licences.
This initiative is part of a broader governmental strategy to simplify and digitize citizen interactions, providing an alternative to traditional physical documents.
Utilizing built-in smartphone security features like facial recognition, the digital wallet offers an optional method for individuals to store and manage their documents virtually.
However, physical documents will still be available for those who prefer them.
Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle has outlined ambitions for the Gov.uk Wallet to include a comprehensive range of government documents by the end of 2027, extending to Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and various other official credentials.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the potential benefits of the new app, stating it aims to simplify everyday interactions by streamlining the identification process and enhancing security.
The initiative aligns with recent plans to achieve £45 billion in efficiency savings through digital transformation and modernizing public service operations.
The Government expects these digital advancements to play a crucial role in overhauling public sector technology, aiming to enhance efficiency while giving citizens more control over their data and interactions with government services.
