Conservative candidate Sir Ashley Fox faces accusations of lying to MPs about his political ambitions to secure a role as chair of the Independent Monitoring Authority (IMA).
Fox, who had promised not to seek political office during his IMA tenure, is the newly selected candidate for the safe seat of Bridgwater in Somerset.
His previous commitment came during a 2020 parliamentary hearing.
Labour MP Maria Eagle criticized Fox, calling his actions a serious question regarding his suitability for public office.
Fox has since stepped down from the IMA and expressed pride in his new candidacy.
The controversy adds to existing issues within the Conservative party, including the recent withdrawal of Sam Trask in Bridgend after inappropriate online comments and Richard Holden's contentious candidacy in Basildon and Billericay.
