Sadiq Khan: London's Ulez-Scrapped Cars Barred from Entering Ukraine
Cars slated for scrapping under London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) scheme can't legally be shipped to Ukraine, according to the Mayor of London's office.
The suggestion to send these vehicles to aid Ukraine came from Vitali Klitschko, the Mayor of Kyiv, but was rejected by Sadiq Khan's office due to legal restrictions.
Conservative mayoral candidate Susan Hall criticized the inability to repurpose the scrapped vehicles as "absurd".
The ULEZ program offers up to £2,000 to Londoners who scrap their vehicles that don't meet emissions standards.
While Sadiq Khan sympathizes with the idea, his office explained that exporting the cars for use in Ukraine doesn't align with the Greater London Authority Act's mandate to benefit London's economy, society, or environment.
Khan has responded by creating a website for Londoners to donate non-compliant vehicles directly to Ukraine, although this bypasses the ULEZ compensation.
