Prince William's tour will focus on British military presence in Estonia and support for Ukraine.
Prince William, the Prince of Wales, is scheduled to visit Estonia next Thursday and Friday as part of his role as Colonel-in-Chief of the Mercian Regiment.
The tour includes a visit to the Tapa Army Base, where British forces are stationed as part of NATO's strategic deployment along the eastern flank, which has gained significance due to increasing tensions with Russia.
Currently, approximately 900 UK service personnel are stationed in Estonia, marking this deployment as the UK's largest permanent overseas military presence.
The backdrop for this mission is the ongoing threat perceived from Russia, particularly following its extensive military actions in Ukraine, which have raised concerns among the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania that share borders with Russia.
The Prince’s itinerary includes a meeting with Alar Karis, the President of Estonia, a country noted for its significant military and political support to Ukraine amidst the conflict.
Additionally, he will visit a newly established school created by the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research in May 2022, aimed at assisting Ukrainian refugees.
There,
Prince William is expected to engage with educators from Ukraine to discuss their experiences and efforts in supporting the mental wellbeing and integration of students in Tallinn.
Further, during his visit, the Prince, who has a noted interest in environmental initiatives, will attend an event focusing on renewable energy start-ups, aligning with his Earthshot Prize initiative that seeks to enhance solutions for environmental challenges.
On the second day of the visit,
Prince William will return to Tapa Army Base, where he will meet with Estonian soldiers and participate in a ceremonial handover, as the Mercian Regiment assumes operational responsibilities from The Royal Dragoon Guards.
This visit underscores the United Kingdom's ongoing commitment to NATO's collective defense strategy in the region.
