1,500 Climate Activists Arrested in The Hague for Blocking Major Highway
On Saturday, over 1,500 climate activists from the Extinction Rebellion group were arrested for blocking a major highway in The Hague.
The protesters were gathering to denounce the impact of fossil fuel subsidies on the economy and environment and demanded that the government take immediate action to address the climate crisis.
The police used water cannons and police vans to clear the road, and some 850 protesters were released without charge.
The protest remained mostly peaceful, but around 3,000 protesters took part in the march.
Dutch authorities had previously refused the demonstrators permission to block the highway, and the police reportedly managed to remove the protesters in the late afternoon.
