London to Experience Above-average Temperatures This Weekend
Forecast predicts London will be warmer than popular Mediterranean destinations as spring heatwave continues.
London is set to experience warm spring weather this weekend, with temperatures expected to reach 18°C, surpassing the warmth of Ibiza and the French Riviera.
The UK Met Office forecasts pleasant conditions throughout the weekend, predicting 'fine and dry with sunny spells' on both Saturday and Sunday, with peak temperatures of 17°C on Saturday and 18°C on Sunday.
For comparison, Ibiza and Nice are expected to have similar highs of 17°C.
Recent measurements indicated that the temperature reached 18.3°C in St James’s Park, London, on Thursday, significantly exceeding the typical March average of 9.2°C. Historical data shows that the highest temperature recorded in March was 25.6°C on March 29, 1968.
Despite the anticipated warm weekend, a shift in weather patterns is forecast for the following week, with daytime temperatures in London predicted to drop to around 8°C. Last spring marked a record high for UK temperatures, although it remains uncertain whether this year will follow a similar trend.
Meteorologists are also monitoring a potential impact from a polar vortex collapse, an extreme weather phenomenon that can result from rapid stratospheric warming, leading to the influx of Arctic air into the jet stream.
This occurrence may bring cooler weather to England later this month.
Jonathan Vautrey, a meteorologist, has indicated that while a cold snap may be developing, it is likely not to be as severe as those experienced earlier this year.
Vautrey noted, 'A cold snap in March is not going to be as harsh as in February.' Notably, he mentioned that not all warming events lead to extreme weather outcomes.
