January 18, 2021 a ‘Global Attack’ on the VI- Hon Malone

January 18, 2021 a ‘Global Attack’ on the VI- Hon Malone

Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Carvin Malone (AL), in his personal capacity via a social media post, called the events of January 18, 2021, in the Virgin Islands 'a global attack' on the territory.

The day, which happened to be Martin Luther King Day, was marked by Governor Augustus J.U. Jaspert announcing a Commission of Inquiry into the affairs of government, following claims of alleged corruption and victimisation.

January 18, 2021 was marked by Governor Augustus J.U. Jasper announcing a Commission of Inquiry into the affairs of government, following claims of poor governance practices and alleged corruption.

Press onslaught put VI in spotlight

What followed was an onslaught of international press turning attention to the VI, accusing the Fahie administration of financial mismanagement in government spending, from as far back as the previous National Democratic Party (NDP) era of governance.

What was significant, however, was that articles emanating out of the UK, made no distinction between the spending under the Fahie administration, and that of the NDP Government. One Social Commentator, Claude O. Skelton-Cline, has since speculated that the UK was preparing to take over the VI, and was using the press as a prelude to justifying the move.

“I remember and will never forget the iconic speech given by the late Honourable Deloris Christopher when debating the "High-Level Framework", which was authored by the British and championed by our outgoing Governor, Gus Jaspert,” Mr Malone said in a Wednesday, January 20, 2021, social media post.

“It was being forced on the BVI for signature and with her resistance and the elections of February 25th 2019, it was never fully implemented,” he remarked.

Hon Carvin Malone related that the potential and sought after-effects of the “Global Attack” via the press which started on January 18, 2021, equate to coverage of events like the official BREXIT exit on January 1, 2021, the Storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and the Hurricanes of 2017.

CoI announcement designed to 'fill room with Smoke' - Hon Malone

With a preverbal “Clear the smoke from the room!” in reference to the 1920’s term “Smoke filled room” political decision making, Hon Malone said the CoI announcement of Governor Jaspert was designed to put VI in the spotlight.

He related that the potential and sought after-effects of the “Global Attack” via the press which started on January 18, 2021, equate to coverage of events like the official BREXIT exit on January 1, 2021, the Storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, and the Hurricanes of 2017.

Other significant press coverage events include 9/11, and the official declaration of Novel Coronavirus outbreak as a global pandemic on March 12, 2020.

While Hon Malone did not mention specific events, rather the dates, he said, “The world awaits the details of the terms and conditions of the COI that was preempted with spectacular GLOBAL announcements designed to fill the room with smoke”.

Mr Malone reminded that the social media post was personal and not in an official capacity.
