Jack Diamond, Sunderland Footballer, Acquitted of Rape Charges
Jack Diamond, 23, a Sunderland winger, has been acquitted of rape and sexual assault charges concerning an incident with a woman he met through a dating app.
The Newcastle Crown Court learned that Diamond and the woman had an intermittent sexual relationship since 2019, which he emphasized was always consensual.
Following the trial, Diamond expressed his desire to continue his football career, and Sunderland AFC confirmed his return to the team. Despite being suspended since the charges in March 2023 and having a loan to Lincoln City revoked, Diamond now sees the verdict as complete vindication.
The court was told that Diamond had an on-off "95%" sexual relationship with the accuser. The woman alleged that Diamond assaulted her during a visit to his residence on May 7, 2022, seeking comfort. However, Diamond insisted the encounter was fully consensual and ceased physical contact when she requested.
His defense suggested that the accuser wanted a more serious relationship, which Diamond did not reciprocate, leading to her distress. The jury took under an hour to find Diamond not guilty on all charges.
Diamond, a local from Washington who joined Sunderland at 16, has received support from former coaches and players who testified to his character during the trial.
Diamond admitted to being possibly naive about maintaining just a sexual relationship with the woman, acknowledging immaturity towards her feelings and the situation.
