Israeli police detained two French military personnel with diplomatic status at the Eleona Church, a Christian church that has been officially owned by France for 160 years and is safeguarded by diplomatic immunity.

The church is situated in East Jerusalem, and the arrests took place just as French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot was scheduled to visit. He canceled his visit because of the Israeli police's presence at the location and the violation of diplomatic immunity.
