Home Office to Investigate Fine Issued to Essex Couple Over Migrant Incident
Couple fined after discovering an undocumented migrant hidden in their motorhome's bike rack while returning from France.
Sir Keir Starmer has announced that the Home Office will investigate the case of Joanne and Adrian Fenton, a couple who received a £1,500 fine after a young man was found concealed in the bike rack of their motorhome.
The couple had returned to Essex from France when they discovered the individual upon their arrival at home.
The Fentons reported the incident to the police after discovering the migrant, claiming they had acted appropriately by informing authorities.
They noted that border officials in Calais had conducted a thorough check of their vehicle and did not uncover the presence of the young man.
At a recent Prime Minister's Questions session, Sir John Whittingdale, the Member of Parliament for Maldon and former Conservative minister, raised the issue on behalf of the Fentons, expressing concern over the implications of issuing a fine to individuals who report such incidents.
He stated, "Will the Prime Minister look at the case of my constituents, Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Fenton, who returned home from visiting France in their motorhome to discover an illegal immigrant concealed in the bike rack?
They reported it immediately to the police, only to receive a fine from the Border Force of £1,500."
Whittingdale further questioned whether the couple, who acted to report the incident, ought to be commended rather than penalized, suggesting that the current handling of the situation could dissuade other citizens from taking responsible action in similar circumstances.
The Prime Minister responded by acknowledging the seriousness of the situation brought to his attention, stating that he had seen some details and was concerned.
He emphasized the importance of the Home Office's review of the case and assured Whittingdale that updates would be provided.
The Fentons are currently pursuing an objection to the imposed penalty.
They may opt to appeal the fine based on the outcome of their objection process.
