Hindujas Appeal Swiss Court's Human Trafficking Verdict
Britain's wealthiest family, the Hindujas, are appealing against a Swiss court's decision sentencing them for human trafficking. They dispute the allegations of exploiting domestic workers in their Geneva villa. The family's lawyers emphasize no effective detention is currently in place and maintain confidence in the judicial process.
Britain's wealthiest family, the Hindujas, expressed their dismay at a Swiss court's decision sentencing some members to jail for human trafficking.
They have lodged an appeal in a higher court to challenge the verdict, which found them guilty of exploiting domestic workers from India at their Geneva villa.
According to a statement by the family's Swiss lawyers, Prakash and Kamal Hinduja, along with their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, were acquitted of all human trafficking charges.
The lawyers highlighted that there is no effective detention for any family members and emphasized that the plaintiffs had withdrawn their complaints.
The case involves allegations of passport seizure, excessive working hours, and insufficient wages.
Prosecutors noted workers were paid in rupees in inaccessible accounts in India, while the family allegedly spent more on their pet dog than on the workers.
The Hinduja family, according to 'The Sunday Times Rich List,' has an estimated wealth of GBP 37.196 billion and continues to be the richest family in the UK.
Their global businesses operate in 48 countries and various sectors including automotive and finance.
