Paris city hall has approved a 20 percent increase in the Eiffel Tower adult admission price starting June 17 to fund urgent renovation work. The price for a lift ride to the top will rise from 29.40 euros, or one dollar 31.90, to 35.30 euros. The decision comes in response to lower visitor numbers during the Covid pandemic and rising renovation costs, which have caused a significant deficit for the tower's operator, SETE.
The Paris city hall has approved a 20 percent increase in the adult admission price for the Eiffel Tower, starting June 17.
Effective next month, the cost for a lift ride to the top of the iconic structure will rise from 29.40 euros, or one dollar 31.90, to 35.30 euros.
This move aims to raise funds for urgent repairs needed due to lower visitor numbers during the
Covid-19 pandemic and rising renovation costs, which have pushed the tower’s operator SETE into a significant deficit.
These deficits include a shortfall of about 120 million euros during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021.
The Paris city council has also decided to lower the annual fee it charges SETE and back a recapitalisation for the operator.
Earlier this year, Eiffel Tower staff went on strike, protesting against what they claimed was insufficient funding for necessary maintenance.
Although the Eiffel Tower has been repainted 19 times since its construction for the 1889 World Fair, it has not had a full paint job since 2010.
Architect Gustave Eiffel recommended repainting every seven years to prevent rust.
In 2022, visitor numbers rebounded to nearly six million, up from 1.5 million in 2020 due to
Covid restrictions.
