DDM monitoring Tropical Wave 3 on VI path

The Virgins Islands Department of Disaster Management (DDM) is currently monitoring Tropical Wave 3 which is the closest Tropical Wave to the [British] Virgin Islands and located over the west-central tropical Atlantic at an estimate of 824 miles off Road Town.

In an update this morning, August 7, 2021, the DDM says the Tropical Wave is producing limited shower activity, however, Significant development of this system is not anticipated as it moves west-northwestward across the Lesser Antilles and Eastern Caribbean Sea during the early to the middle part of next week.

It said the formation chance through 48 hours is low to near 0% and that the formation chance through 5 days is low 0-10%.

“A tropical wave is expected in the area late Saturday into Sunday with the possibility of generating unsettled weather conditions for the area mainly early Sunday,” the department warned.

The DDM said on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, however, a more robust wave will enter the area and is expected to produce cloudy skies with a high chance of showers where some could be moderate to heavy at times.

Possible rainfall total for the forecast period is 12.7 mm to 25.4 mm or 0.5 to 1.0 inches.

“Additionally, an increase in Saharan dust is expected behind the wave on Sunday and will reduce air quality as well as visibility levels,” the DDM further warned.
